If you’ve ever said ‘my back just aches’ or ‘it feels like burning or tingling,’ you’re already describing the type of pain—and that matters more than you think.
Always yawning? Droopy eyes? This must be Sleepy.
Crossed arms and a grouchy face? That's Grumpy, for sure.

Each of Snow White's little friends can be identified by his personality. Your pain has a personality, too, and the way you describe it gives clues about where it's coming from and how to help you most.
Prepare yourself; we're nerding out today. 🤓
Why Did I Wake Up in Pain?
Nociceptive pain is the most common type of pain and the reason most people see a chiropractor for the first time.
When pain receptors, called nociceptors, are stimulated, a signal is sent to your brain that damage has or is about to occur. Yes, this includes if you "just woke up with it," because pain is often the last sign of a growing problem.
Nerves that transmit pain signals are found throughout your body in skin, bone, muscle, joints, organs, blood vessels, and more.
Where Is My Pain Coming From?
Here are four key indicators of nociceptive pain:
Often sharp, aching, or throbbing in nature
Localized to one area
Impacted by movement/rest, pressure
Gets better as healing progresses
You are experiencing nociceptive pain when you break a bone, cut your hand, or touch a hot pan.
Degenerated joints or spinal discs, faulty joint motion, muscle spasm and weakness also produce nociceptive pain, and these conditions respond very well to chiropractic care.
How Does Chiropractic Care Reduce Nociceptive Pain?
First, chiropractic wins the communication race. Not all nerves transmit signals at the same speed. The basic chiropractic maneuver, an adjustment, stimulates mechanoreceptors, nerve endings that collect mechanical information. These impulses reach your brain faster than pain signals, reducing the sensation of pain!
Second, chiropractic care goes beyond simple pain relief, by correcting the root cause of the pain. Better function not only means lasting change but also less pain, dysfunction, and injury later.
FUN FACT: The brain does not contain nociceptors. Rather than true "brain pain," headaches often signal a problem with tissues in the upper back and neck or sometimes in structures adjacent to the brain.

Is Tingling a Nerve Problem?
When pain is due to damage or dysfunction of the nerves themselves it's called neuropathic. Frequently, people book with Lifeway Mobile Chiropractic because of radiating pain, numbness, or tingling in their arms or legs.
Key Indicators of Neuropathic Pain:
Often described as electric, shooting, burning, or tingling
Follows a nerve distribution (e.g. sciatica is pain down the back of the leg where the sciatic nerve passes)
Triggered by light touch, pressure on the nerve, or nothing at all
May linger after the original injury has been corrected

Have you ever had that "pins and needles" sensation in your fingers or the feeling that your foot has "fallen asleep"? That's neuropathic pain.
These examples are mild and easily corrected. Neuropathic pain can also be severe and long-lasting as nerves become overexcitable, sending pain signals to the brain when there is no physical problem.
Treatment that stimulates the parasympathetic portion of the nervous system, the part that dominates "rest and digest" activities, can help reduce this hypersensitivity.
Chiropractic adjustments and vagus nerve stimulation are two methods used by our practitioner. In medical offices, medications can be prescribed to help modulate nervous system activity.
